Traders from Ho and Akatsi markets recently took part in a fire safety quiz organised by the Volta Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), aimed at raising awareness on fire prevention and emergency response.
The competition tested participants’ knowledge on fire safety practices, the proper use of fire extinguishers, and essential steps to take during emergencies.

At the end of the contest, Ho Market emerged as the winner, receiving a plaque in recognition of their performance. Both Ho and Akatsi markets were also presented with citations for their participation and commitment to promoting fire safety education.

Addressing participants, the Municipal Chief Executive for Ho, Stephen Adom, emphasised the importance of preventive measures in markets, which are often vulnerable to devastating fire incidents.

The Volta Regional Fire Commander, Joseph Tetteh Freeman, reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to continuous public education and community engagement. “Market fires often result in significant economic losses. Empowering traders with knowledge is key to prevention,” he noted.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the GNFS to collaborate with local authorities and market associations to reduce fire outbreaks and protect livelihoods across the Volta Region.
