Member of Parliament for Akuapem North and Senior Advisor to the Bawumia campaign, Sammi Awuku, says he was not surprised by Bryan Acheampong’s strong showing in the Eastern Region during the recently held party primaries.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Mr. Awuku explained that internal data from the Bawumia campaign had projected an overall victory, but Bryan Acheampong’s targeted regional strategy significantly shaped voting outcomes in the Eastern Region.

According to him, Acheampong’s campaign team advanced a narrative that they had financed the party’s 2024 campaign activities in the region. He said this message placed pressure on some Members of Parliament and influenced delegates, even though aspects of the claim were disputed.

Mr. Awuku noted that the messaging portrayed MPs who supported other candidates as ungrateful, a development the Bawumia campaign sought to counter.

Despite these challenges, he said the Bawumia camp adopted what he described as a “growing campaign” strategy focused on grassroots engagement.

“I expected Bryan Acheampong to win in the Eastern Region. Our data showed that we were on course for overall victory, but the kind of campaign his team ran made a significant impact,” Mr. Awuku stated.

“They pushed the message that they were financing the party’s 2024 campaign in the Eastern Region, and that affected perceptions about MPs. Those of us who supported other candidates were painted as ungrateful, even though we challenged some of those claims,” he added.

Mr. Awuku further revealed that about 15 out of the 23 Members of Parliament in the Eastern Region openly declared their support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a factor he said shaped the internal dynamics of the contest.
