A total of 170 individuals suffering from various eye conditions in the Ahafo Region have successfully undergone free eye surgeries at the Goaso Municipal Hospital.
The exercise was part of a four-day medical outreach aimed at addressing the growing number of untreated eye conditions in the region. Speaking to Adom News, Professor Seth Lartey, an eye specialist at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), described the intervention as timely, noting that the region currently lacks resident eye surgeons.
According to Professor Lartey, many people with treatable eye conditions in the Ahafo Region are forced to live with their ailments due to limited access to specialist care, often resulting in preventable blindness. He added that the outreach had helped save many beneficiaries from losing their sight permanently.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed joy after the surgery, saying they had struggled with poor vision for years but can now see clearly following the procedures.
They also expressed gratitude to the West African College of Physicians and Surgeons for organising the free medical exercise and for providing them with medication to support their recovery.
