The Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, has clarified that the official cost of obtaining a DV vehicle registration plate is GH¢417.25, dismissing reports of higher charges at DVLA offices.
His statement comes amid growing public complaints about unauthorised intermediaries—commonly referred to as “goro boys and girls”—who reportedly sell DV plates for between GH¢1,300 and GH¢1,500, leaving many vehicle owners frustrated.
In a Facebook post on February 4, Mr. Kotey explained that such inflated charges are not authorised by the Authority but stem from middlemen operating outside the official system.
He disclosed that the DVLA has restricted the issuance of DV plates to registered car dealerships and recognised garages, as part of efforts to sanitise the process.
According to Mr. Kotey, the move is intended to tighten controls, eliminate illegal practices and protect applicants from exploitation.
He stressed that the Authority remains committed to transparency and urged the public to avoid dealing with unauthorised persons when applying for DV plates, noting that reforms are underway to ensure a smoother and fairer registration process for vehicle owners.
