Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, has expressed grave concern over the rising incidents of fire outbreaks that have destroyed girls’ dormitories in parts of the Northern Region.
Speaking during a visit to Pong Tamale Senior High School and Tolon Senior High School following recent fire incidents, Dr. Apaak called for stronger collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the Ghana National Fire Service, through the Ministry of the Interior, to develop a comprehensive and preventive strategy.
He stressed the need for thorough investigations into the causes of the fires, including the possible use of unapproved electrical appliances by students or acts of deliberate arson.
“This is becoming one too many, and this is happening within just the Northern Region. I believe the time has come for us to work closely with the Ministry of the Interior and the Ghana National Fire Service to put preventive measures in place, rather than always reacting after the fact,” he said.
Dr. Apaak also urged school authorities to heighten vigilance around school premises, warning that some individuals may have malicious intentions.
“Vigilance is key. We must pay close attention to who enters our school environments because not everyone may mean well. If there are people bent on causing harm, we must be able to identify and stop them early,” he added.
