The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwadaso in the Ashanti Region, Eric Assibey, has warned artisans at Sofoline against burning refuse at mechanic shops, emphasizing the risks of fire outbreaks.

The Assembly will establish a taskforce to oversee daily activities in markets and shops to prevent future fires outbreaks.

His caution comes in the wake of a recent devastating fire which ravaged a cluster of mechanic shops, leaving at least 34 vehicles completely burnt.

Preliminary investigations has indicated that the fire was likely caused by someone burning refuse around the mechanic shops.

Mr. Assibey stressed that burning refuse at these shops poses significant dangers, capable of causing widespread destruction of property and potentially claiming lives.

In the aftermath, victims have begun rebuilding their burnt-out container shops, following assessments and guidance from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and municipal engineers.

The MCE visited the scene with NADMO officials and engineers, ensuring affected artisans rebuilding their shops comply with given instructions.

“From what we have heard, the fire was sparked by burning refuse in the shops by an unknown person. To prevent a repeat, we are stepping up patrols in markets, mechanic shops, and other fire-prone areas with our task force, ensuring we are on top of potential hazards,” he said.

Mr. Assibey also called on the artisans to make sanitation a top priority, emphasizing that maintaining a clean environment would help prevent future fire outbreaks and promote their safety and well-being.

The MCE handed-over 20 packets of roofing sheets to the affected traders on behalf of the regional minister and Municipal Assembly, to aid in rebuilding.

He also assured them of government’s support, saying measures are being put in place to help restore their businesses.

Master Lamusu who spoke for the fire-affected artisans, expressed gratitude to the Municipal Assembly for their support and assistance.

He pledged that the artisans will take the recommendations seriously and implement measures to prevent such disasters from happening again, ensuring a safer working environment.
