Senior Adviser to the Bawumia Campaign Team and Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has emphasized that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) success in the 2028 general elections will largely depend on how supporters of the various flagbearer aspirants conduct themselves.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Breakfast Show, Mr Awuku urged party members to put the January 31 primaries behind them and unite behind the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, with a shared focus on winning the 2028 elections.

“The NPP’s challenge will not be the big men who contested. It will be those around them—our commentary, our conduct, our ability to accommodate differences, and keeping the bigger picture of the party winning in 2028 in mind,” he said.

“That is why it is often said: the victor must be magnanimous in victory, and the loser must be gracious in defeat,” he added.

Mr Awuku also cautioned supporters of Dr Bawumia against letting post-primary celebrations or online trolling undermine party unity.

“For those of us who supported Dr Bawumia, our commentary should reflect his views, his persona, and what he stands for. A little teasing or political banter is normal, but it should never degenerate into actions that divide the party,” he stressed.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was elected NPP flagbearer after securing 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid ballots cast. Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong came second with 46,554 votes (23.76%), followed by Dr Bryan Acheampong with 36,303 votes (18.53%). Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum placed fourth with 1,999 votes (1.02%), while Kwabena Agyei Agyepong finished fifth with 402 votes (0.21%).
