The Ministry of the Interior, working with the Diaspora Affairs Office at the Presidency, has announced a temporary halt in the processing of Ghanaian citizenship applications for historical diasporans.
In a statement issued on Sunday, February 1, the two bodies said the decision is part of efforts to improve and reorganise the existing application framework to make it more efficient, accessible and convenient for applicants.
According to the statement, the pause will allow officials to review current procedures and introduce reforms that will enhance service delivery when applications resume.
“The temporary suspension will provide the necessary time to refine the procedures and ensure a smoother experience for applicants once the process resumes,” the statement said.
The Interior Ministry and the Diaspora Affairs Office stressed that the move does not signal a retreat from Ghana’s engagement with the global African community, but rather a step to strengthen it.
They reiterated Ghana’s commitment to welcoming people of African descent seeking to reconnect with the country and formalise their status as citizens.

Officials indicated that new timelines and revised guidelines for the citizenship process will be announced later through authorised platforms.
Once the updates are completed, prospective applicants will be informed on how and when submissions can begin again, the statement added.
