A Basic Five pupil of Falahiyat E/A Primary School Block “A” is receiving medical care at St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital in Damongo, Savannah Region, after he was allegedly assaulted by his class teacher, identified as Mr. Fatawu.

The boy’s father, Abdul Wahidu Mahama, said the incident occurred on Tuesday, January 20, during a classroom exercise.

According to him, the teacher assigned homework, and when his son scored two out of eight, he and some classmates were reportedly ordered to lie on top of dual desks in the classroom.

Mr. Fatawu is said to have used a wire cane to whip the pupils on their backs and other parts of the body.

“My son tried to block the cane with his hand, but the teacher flogged him heavily and verbally insulted the children for their low performance,” Mr. Mahama told Accra-based Citi FM.

He explained that the following day, Wednesday, January 21, the child began complaining of severe pain in his hand. Efforts by the family to manage the situation at home were unsuccessful, prompting them to rush him to St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital in Damongo.

Doctors admitted the pupil, administered medication, and scheduled him for surgery. The operation was carried out on Tuesday, January 27, at around 10 a.m., according to the father.

Mr. Mahama said the teacher has not visited the child since the alleged assault.

“He has not come to the hospital to see my son,” he noted, adding that the teacher only visited their home once, on Sunday, January 25, after the child’s mother contacted him.

Meanwhile, the headmistress of the school, along with another staff member, has visited the hospital to check on the pupil’s condition.

The father is appealing to the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant authorities to intervene and ensure justice is served.

“This is about protecting our innocent future assets,” he said.
