The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has announced plans to step up enforcement against unlicensed jewellery manufacturers, gold fabricators, and refineries operating across the country, following growing concerns about widespread breaches of licensing rules within the gold value chain.
In a statement released on Wednesday, January 28, the Board said it has identified several operators conducting business without the required authorisation from GoldBod.
“It has come to the attention of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) that some jewellery manufacturers, fabricators, and gold refineries are operating without a valid licence from the GoldBod,” the statement said.
GoldBod stressed that only persons and companies that have been duly licensed are permitted to engage in gold trading, jewellery manufacturing, gold fabrication, and refining activities in Ghana.
The Authority explained that any operation carried out without proper certification is in violation of the law and attracts sanctions under Act 1140.
“Engaging in these activities without a valid GoldBod licence constitutes an offence and is punishable under Act 1140,” the Board noted.
It recalled that in an earlier notice issued on October 22, 2025, all existing jewellery manufacturers, fabricators, and refineries were directed to regularise their operations by December 31, 2025.
“On October 22, 2025, the GoldBod issued a press statement indicating that all existing jewellery manufacturers, fabricators, and gold refineries were required to regularise their operations latest by 31st December 2025,” the statement added.
According to GoldBod, the directive was meant to promote full regulatory compliance and improve supervision within the gold trading sector.
However, with several operators still defaulting after the deadline, the Board announced that inspection teams will be deployed nationwide from Monday, February 2, 2026, to ensure only licensed businesses are involved in jewellery manufacturing, gold fabrication, and refining.
At the same time, GoldBod commended companies that have complied with the licensing process and have been officially issued with GoldBod Jewellery and Fabrication Licences. Among them are Sourcechain Enterprise, Shepaj Limited Company, Koshuuz Enterprise, M.J. Jewellery Limited Company, Mahmoud’s Jewellery Limited, Agyaba Jewellery, Gold Casting, Goldlovers GH Limited, Wappahs Jewellery, Mahalaxmi Ghana Limited, and Sahara Jewellery Limited Company.
The Board reaffirmed its resolve to enforce regulations governing the gold sector, saying its actions are anchored in accountability, transparency, and responsible management of Ghana’s mineral resources.
“GoldBod remains committed to enforcing the laws and regulations that govern the gold trading sector in the spirit of accountability and transparency,” the statement concluded.
