The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has launched an investigation into an alleged assault on a journalist by military personnel at Walewale in the North East Region.

The incident, reported on Monday, January 26, 2026, is said to have occurred on the outskirts of Walewale, an area that has recently experienced heightened insecurity due to repeated attacks on public transport, resulting in deaths and injuries.

Reports indicate that soldiers travelling in an armoured vehicle and a military truck from Bolgatanga to Tamale allegedly stopped in Walewale and assaulted the North East Regional Correspondent of Media General, along with other civilians, without provocation.

The soldiers are also alleged to have damaged property at the scene, including motorbikes and commercial vehicles, creating fear and apprehension among residents.

Available information suggests that the journalist was detained for more than four hours, and images on his mobile phone documenting his injuries were reportedly deleted.

In a statement, the Ghana Armed Forces acknowledged the incident and assured the public that investigations have commenced to establish the facts.

GAF also cautioned that the prevailing security situation in the North East and Upper East Regions has necessitated intensified military operations, some of which may be conducted without prior notice.

The Armed Forces urged the public to cooperate with security agencies to help maintain peace and stability, noting that the outcome of the investigation will determine any further action.
