The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has warned that all individuals involved in the violent clash between youth in Jacobu and police officers will be arrested and prosecuted.

The confrontation, which occurred over the weekend, led to the death of one person after some youth allegedly mobilised to forcibly retrieve a pump-action gun previously seized by police from a minor at an illegal mining site in the area.

According to police reports, the deceased reportedly took the firearm from an officer and attempted to flee, prompting police to open fire.

Speaking to journalists on Monday, January 26, Dr. Amoakohene expressed condolences to the bereaved family but emphasised that attacks on security personnel will not be tolerated.

“My condolences go to the family of the deceased. The Municipal Chief Executive has engaged them, and although they are remorseful and seeking access to the body, investigations and due process must be followed,” he said.

The Regional Minister commended the two police officers involved for standing their ground and urged residents to use lawful channels to address grievances instead of confronting security personnel.

“If you have any problem, do not confront the police. The police are your friends. There are legal avenues to seek redress rather than mobilising and attacking men in uniform,” he noted.

He warned that condoning such acts would undermine society, stressing that disagreements with police actions should be resolved through the courts.

Dr. Amoakohene also revealed that an emergency Regional Security Council (REGSEC) meeting has been convened to review the incident and address other security concerns in the region.

He added that those who participated in the unlawful assembly and disobeyed lawful police orders would be held accountable, and that investigations would determine the root cause of the incident and identify those who instigated the attack.

The Regional Minister further noted that the family of the deceased has expressed remorse and is cooperating with the police, while appealing for a speedy investigation to allow for burial arrangements.

He, however, stressed that investigations would not be rushed and that all necessary procedures must be completed before the body is released.
