The Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment, Science and Technology has expressed concern over rising illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, within the Newmont Ahafo South Mines concession in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region.

Speaking during a working visit to the mine, Vice Chairperson and Member of Parliament for Suame, John Darko, told ADOM NEWS that intelligence indicates some individuals have been encroaching on Newmont’s concession to engage in illegal mining, often leading to fatal accidents.

“These actions are unlawful and must be stopped to prevent frequent confrontations between the mining company and residents, which sometimes turn violent and result in loss of lives,” he said.

Mr. Darko highlighted Newmont’s contribution to national development through tax payments and its role in reducing local unemployment, stressing that residents must help create a peaceful environment for the company to operate effectively.

He further assured that the committee will continue monitoring the company’s operations to ensure compliance with environmental and mining laws while safeguarding the interests of the local communities.
