Students of the University of Media, Arts and Communication – Institute of Journalism (UNIMAC-IJ) on Friday, January 23, held a candlelight vigil in honour of their colleague, Nelson Blay Nokotey, a Level 300 Journalism student who died after being hit by an unregistered vehicle near the Dzorwulu stretch of the N1 Highway, close to the South Legon campus.
Nelson was knocked down on January 19, 2026, at about 4:00 p.m., while returning home from school. The driver of the vehicle reportedly fled the scene after the incident.
The vigil also served as a platform for students to renew their demand for the construction of a footbridge along the highway, which they say has become a dangerous crossing point for students and residents who use the route daily.
Participants carried candles and placards as they marched in silence, calling attention to the risks pedestrians face when crossing the busy stretch.

Speaking to Accra-based Citi News on behalf of the students, Helen Porsoo appealed to the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, to intervene and push for urgent safety measures to prevent similar tragedies.
She stressed that the loss of their colleague should not be in vain and that practical steps must be taken to protect students who commute along the highway.
The Dean of Students at UNIMAC-IJ also addressed the gathering, urging students to remain calm while seeking justice.
“Our anger should be directed towards the driver who carelessly knocked down and killed Nelson, and we must pray that justice is served,” the Dean said.
University authorities have since assured students of their support as investigations continue into the incident.
