The management of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park (KNMP) has expressed full support for calls to rename Kotoka International Airport after Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

In a press release dated January 21, 2026, the Park endorsed a recent appeal by a coalition of concerned citizens, describing Dr Nkrumah as Ghana’s founder and Africa’s foremost Pan-Africanist.

According to KNMP, as the country’s principal international gateway, the national airport should reflect Ghana’s highest ideals, values, and historical foundations.

“Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s unparalleled contribution to Ghana’s independence, statehood, and Pan-African unity makes him the most fitting symbol to welcome the world to our beloved country,” the statement said.

The Park argued that renaming the airport is not merely symbolic but a moral imperative, emphasizing that national honours should reflect truth, justice, and Ghana’s collective identity.

It further noted that the airport currently honours a figure associated with the overthrow of Dr Nkrumah, describing the situation as contradictory and troubling.

“This contradiction sends a dangerous signal and normalizes betrayal, subversion, and moral bankruptcy,” the statement added.

The KNMP reiterated its call to rename the airport in honour of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, whom it described as Ghana’s founder and the African man of the millennium.
