The Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment, Science and Technology has announced plans to take strict action against mining companies that violate Ghana’s environmental protection laws.
The Committee says it will clamp down on any mining firm that fails to comply with measures designed to safeguard the environment and protect affected communities.
Speaking during a working visit to Newmont Ahafo South Mines in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region, Vice Chairperson of the Committee, John Darko, told Adom News that the Committee will conduct nationwide inspections of mining companies to assess adherence to environmental regulations.
“This exercise is aimed at ensuring that mining activities do not endanger lives, farmlands, or water bodies. Companies found acting contrary to the law will be dealt with accordingly,” he said.
After touring the Newmont Ahafo South Mines, Mr Darko expressed satisfaction with the company’s environmental management practices, particularly its efforts at land reclamation and restoration of mined areas.
Speaking on behalf of the company, Process Manager Samuel Bonney Noi described the Committee’s visit as timely and reassuring. He said the engagement helped clarify issues, especially in response to what he called false accusations regarding the company’s commitment to environmental protection.
