The Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has described Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as a man of strong character, focus and integrity, saying those qualities are what make him appealing to Ghanaians.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Mr Oppong Nkrumah dismissed claims that Dr Bawumia made derogatory remarks about the late Prof Albert Adu Boahen.
According to him, the allegation surfaced after Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong was told that Dr Bawumia had commented on Prof Adu Boahen’s health and his decision not to contest the 1996 NPP presidential primaries.
However, Mr Oppong Nkrumah insisted the claim was false.
“Dr Bawumia’s speeches usually last about 45 minutes to one hour, and those of us who work closely with him listen to them over and over again. There was absolutely nowhere in that speech where he mentioned Prof Adu Boahen,” he said.
He explained that it was rather comments made by Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, that were wrongly attributed to Dr Bawumia.
“It was Wontumi who made those comments, not Dr Bawumia. Unfortunately, someone told Kennedy Agyapong that it was Bawumia, and that led to the attacks and insults against him,” he stated.
Mr Oppong Nkrumah said despite the backlash, Dr Bawumia remained calm and urged his team to stay focused on the campaign.
“When he heard all the attacks, Dr Bawumia simply said we should remain focused. He told us there would be distractions in the last two weeks of the election and that we should concentrate on campaigning on the ground to win, and think about reconciliation after the winner is declared,” he noted.
He said this calm, disciplined approach reflects the character and attributes that many Ghanaians admire in the Vice President.
“That is the kind of character Ghanaians love about Dr Bawumia,” he added.
Mr Oppong Nkrumah further said Dr Bawumia stands out among the aspirants because of the clarity of his ideas and the strength of his policy proposals.
“Dr Bawumia’s ideas are clear, and his policies have the potential to positively transform lives across the country,” he said.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026.
The five aspirants contesting the race are Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
