A member of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) task force has been shot during a routine anti-galamsey operation in the Dormaa Central Municipality of the Bono Region.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, in a bush along the Subinkurom–Kyeremasu stretch, where the task force had gone to clamp down on illegal mining activities.
According to NAIMOS, the team came under attack after armed assailants, who were hiding in the bushes, opened fire upon sighting the officers. This triggered an exchange of gunfire between the task force and the attackers.
During the confrontation, one NAIMOS officer sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh. He was immediately rushed to the St. Matthew Catholic Hospital at Ampenkuro, where he is currently receiving treatment and responding positively.
In the course of the exchange, one of the assailants who reportedly opened fire on the task force was shot. The deceased, identified as Abuu Ibrahim, was later pronounced dead on arrival at the same hospital.
NAIMOS has condemned the attack and reiterated its commitment to the fight against illegal mining, assuring the public that its operations will continue despite increasing resistance and threats from armed groups.
The Secretariat has also called on stakeholders to continue supporting efforts to curb illegal mining activities across the country.
