Water supply to large parts of eastern Accra and the Tema Metropolis has been disrupted following a burst on a major 42-inch transmission pipeline, Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced.
The incident occurred on Monday, January 19, 2026, affecting the delivery of treated water to several communities along the eastern corridor of the capital.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 20, GWL said its engineers responded promptly and have been working continuously to repair the damaged pipeline. The company explained that due to the size of the pipe and the technical demands of the work, repairs must be carried out carefully to ensure the system remains safe and durable after restoration.
GWL assured customers that efforts are being intensified to restore normal water supply as soon as possible and apologised for the inconvenience caused.
Affected areas include the entire Tema Metropolis and parts of Accra such as Ashaiman, Gbetsele, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsonaa, Spintex, sections of East Legon, Nungua, Teshie, and surrounding communities.
The utility provider has urged essential service operators, including hospitals and schools, to contact GWL for support while repairs are ongoing. Customers can reach the company via its toll-free line 0800 40000 (Telecel only), phone numbers 0302 2218240, 0207 385 089, 0207 385 090, or via WhatsApp on 0555 123 393 and 0555 155 524.
