The Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, has announced plans to construct a hospital dedicated to drivers, aimed at addressing their specific healthcare needs.

Speaking to Channel One TV in Jomoro during the sod-cutting ceremony for a new DVLA office on Friday, January 16, Mr. Kotey said the initiative is designed to motivate drivers, similar to health facilities set up by organizations such as banks and COCOBOD. He noted that the hospital is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

“At a time when the conduct of some drivers is making life uncomfortable for passengers, the Authority is working towards the construction of a Drivers’ Hospital to address the critical healthcare needs of drivers by year-end,” he said.

The ceremony also marked the beginning of construction for the Jomoro DVLA office at Samenya. Once completed, the office will expand DVLA’s presence in the Western Region, making services more accessible to rural communities.

On the sidelines, Mr. Kotey emphasized that decentralizing DVLA services is a key strategy to curb the activities of middlemen, often referred to as “goro boys,” who exploit the system.

“The only way we can curb the mischief of goro boys is to bring our services closer to the people. This is a conscious effort we are embarking on. We promise the people of Ghana that by the end of this year, we will build 20 offices,” he stated.

Deputy Minister for Transport and Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, highlighted that the new office will ease the burden on residents who currently travel long distances for DVLA services.

“Our constituency previously had only one DVLA office in Ellembelle, meaning residents had to travel all the way to Takoradi or Axim, which is costly. I promised my people during the campaign that we would work hard to ensure they benefit, and today, we have started that process with the sod-cutting of the DVLA office in Samenya,” she said.
