Two arrested over illegal tree cutting at Aburi Botanical Gardens

The Akuapem South Municipal Assembly has confirmed the arrest of two individuals in connection with the unauthorized felling of trees at the Aburi Botanical Gardens.

In a press release dated January 16, 2026, the Assembly stated that the suspects, including the curator of the Gardens, are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

The arrests follow widespread media reports on the incident, prompting the Assembly, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, to launch an immediate probe into the circumstances surrounding the tree cutting at the historic site.

Describing the Aburi Botanical Gardens as a treasured ecological and tourism asset, the Assembly emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the site for present and future generations and preventing similar incidents.

A technical team has been deployed to assess the extent of the damage, and a restoration plan will be developed in consultation with the Department of Parks and Gardens in Accra.

The Assembly assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that anyone found culpable will face the full rigours of the law. Citizens with credible information have been urged to assist by contacting the Assembly or the Aburi Police Station.
