The Central Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has strongly condemned a violent incident that disrupted operations at the Akoti Health Centre in the Assin Fosu District on Sunday, January 11, 2026.
In a statement, the Directorate emphasized that hospitals and clinics must remain neutral spaces focused on saving lives, not sites of violence.
“The Central Regional Health Directorate strongly condemns all acts of violence within health facilities in the region. Health institutions are neutral and protected spaces dedicated solely to the preservation of life. Any attack on clients or health workers is unacceptable and undermines the safety, confidence, and effective functioning of the healthcare system,” the statement read.
The GHS said the steps being taken are aimed at restoring confidence among staff and ensuring uninterrupted delivery of essential services to the public.
The disturbance occurred while health personnel were attending to emergency cases. Reports indicate that two injured persons from Assin Wurakese were rushed to the centre for treatment after allegedly being assaulted.
While they were receiving care, the suspected attacker also arrived at the facility seeking medical attention. Shortly afterward, a group reportedly stormed the health centre, armed with offensive weapons, and attacked the alleged assailant in full view of health workers, patients, and visitors.
The incident caused panic, endangered lives and property, and disrupted normal operations at the facility.
Following the attack, the Ghana Police Service was notified to investigate, apprehend those responsible, and bolster security at the Akoti Health Centre.
The GHS assured residents of its commitment to the safety of workers, patients, and visitors across the region, adding that management will continue to collaborate with security agencies and other stakeholders to prevent similar incidents. The public has also been urged to support efforts to maintain peace and safety in all health facilities.
