A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Ashanti Regional Chairman, Yaw Amankwaah says the party risks another defeat in 2028 if the delegates opt for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the flagbearer again.

Speaking on Nhyira FM’s Kuro Yi Mu Nsem, Mr. Amankwah stated that the party needs a bold, decisive leader rather than a repeat of the same strategy that failed in 2024.

“There is a short route back to power, yet we are being pushed to take the long road. Presenting Bawumia again could mean another defeat,” he cautioned.

He expressed concern over senior officials from former President Akufo‑Addo’s administration publicly endorsing Bawumia despite the NPP’s heavy loss in the 2024 elections.

He said the atmosphere within the party feels increasingly hostile to dissenting voices.

“When you listen to the Bawumia camp, it almost sounds as though anyone who dares to contest their candidate has committed an offense simply for standing in the way,” he remarked.

Mr. Amankwah has officially thrown his weight behind Kennedy Agyapong to lead the party as flagbearer for the 2028 general election.

He argued that Kennedy Agyapong is the only candidate among the five aspirants who is capable of steering the NPP back to power.

“Let me be frank: Kennedy Agyapong is the only candidate who can bring us back,” Amankwah said. “Everywhere I go—especially among the youth—his name keeps coming up. The energy around him is palpable, and it’s clear the grassroots are rallying behind his vision.”

Amankwah emphasized that the calls for Agyapong are not coming from party elites alone but from ordinary Ghanaians who are eager for a fresh direction.

He urged party leaders to listen to the electorate.

“It is Ghanaians who are calling for Kennedy Agyapong, and they will ultimately decide in the general election. Why should we reject him and pick a candidate who could keep us in opposition for years?” he quizzed.

He concluded by urging party delegates to consider the grassroots sentiment and choose a candidate who can reignite the NPP’s base and win back the trust of voters across the country.
