The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Abass Imoro, has refuted claims of artificial scarcity in the transport sector, describing such allegations as unfair and not reflective of the realities on the ground.

The claims were made earlier by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

The Abura Asebu-Kwamankese MP had suggested that some commercial drivers were deliberately limiting vehicle availability to inflate fares, despite recent reductions in fuel prices and import duties on spare parts.

However, speaking in an interview on Adom TV’s Trotro, Mr. Imoro explained that most drivers rely on daily earnings to survive and would not intentionally keep their vehicles off the road at the expense of their income.

He emphasised that GPRTU has consistently condemned any driver who exploits passengers, particularly during evening rush hours when commuters face difficulty securing transport. “We are committed to protecting passengers from unfair practices,” he added.

In response to the concerns, the Minister of Transport, Joseph Nikpe, has scheduled a meeting with transport unions to address the issue and ensure that errant operators are held accountable, aiming to ease the hardships faced by commuters.
