Health workers at the Akoti Health Centre in Assin Wurakese, within the Assin Fosu Municipality of the Central Region, have threatened to withdraw their services following a violent attack on a patient by armed individuals at the facility.
The incident stemmed from a confrontation between a man identified as Yaw Buabeng and a couple, during which both parties reportedly sustained cutlass wounds. One of the victims, identified only as Daniel, who suffered severe injuries to his arm, was the first to arrive at the health centre for emergency treatment.
Shortly afterwards, Yaw Buabeng, who had sustained serious head and hand injuries, also arrived at the facility to seek medical attention. However, while nurses were attending to him, about ten young men armed with machetes and sticks stormed the health centre and brutally attacked him, beating him into a coma.
The violent incident triggered panic among health workers, forcing nurses on duty to flee the facility out of fear for their lives.
Following the attack, health officials demanded a thorough police investigation and the immediate arrest of those responsible. They warned that failure to ensure justice and adequate security could compel staff to seek transfers due to serious safety concerns at the health centre.
The matter has since been reported to the Assin Fosu District Police Command for investigation.
In response, a team of police officers led by the District Commander, ASP Jacob Kumdzro, together with the Assin Fosu Municipal Health Director, Benjamin Amoakoh, visited the facility to assess the situation and reassure staff of their safety. The team pledged to enhance security measures at the health centre to prevent a recurrence.
Commenting on the incident, the Divisional Police Commander, ACP Dr Asare Nyarkoh, said the police are engaging community leaders to educate residents on the dangers of violence and lawlessness.
He disclosed that Yaw Buabeng, the suspect in the initial altercation, is currently receiving treatment at St. Francis Hospital under police guard, and appealed for calm as investigations continue.
