Former Minister and Abetifi MP, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has dismissed calls from some concerned residents of Kwahu urging him to withdraw from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential flagbearership race, describing the demands as politically motivated and unfounded.

The group had accused Dr. Acheampong of actions they claim could undermine party unity and electoral prospects, citing allegations by Opare Ansah, a leading NPP member, that the former Minister once threatened to boycott campaign activities in the Eastern Region during the 2024 electioneering period.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam, spokesperson for the Bryan Acheampong campaign, Pius Enam Hadzide, described the calls as a deliberate attempt to distract the former Minister, who he says is steadily gaining ground in the race.

“This is no issue at all. I believe it is mere political propaganda,” Hadzide stated. “People can see clearly that he has taken the lead in the contest and is likely to be victorious, so some want to deliberately derail attention. We are not perturbed. We are focused on the ultimate goal, which is victory.”

Hadzide also addressed claims that Dr. Acheampong had allegedly blocked Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia from visiting Kwahu during his campaign, questioning the validity of the allegation.

“How can Bryan Acheampong decide where another aspirant goes to campaign? That assertion does not make sense,” he said.

On concerns regarding recent chieftaincy disputes in Kwahu, Hadzide emphasised that political actors must avoid engaging in matters that could be interpreted as taking sides.

“We all know there have been chieftaincy issues in Kwahu recently. There is no way anyone could go and pay a courtesy call on a purported destooled chief without being seen as involving themselves in chieftaincy matters,” he explained.

He added that advising a presidential aspirant to steer clear of sensitive issues and focus on campaigning should not be construed as hostility or obstruction.

“These are machinations by deliberate politicians who know that Bryan Acheampong is the best bet,” Hadzide concluded.
