Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has called for the resignation or dismissal of the Board Chairman of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) Professor Vincent Assanful the controversial SHS Physical Education & Health teachers’ manual.
Mr. Aboagye claims that public scrutiny of the manual only began after his decision to circulate the document widely.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, he argued that but for his publication, Prof. Assanful or NaCCA at large would not have reacted to concerns about portions of the document.
According to him, the manual was first shared with him by a concerned teacher who believed aspects of the content needed urgent public attention.
He questioned how the controversy could arise if the NaCCA Board Chair was unaware of the content that had gone to print.
“I was the first person to share the document, so if we didn’t make it public three days ago, NaCCA wouldn’t have been aware of the content of their document. If the NaCCA Board Chairman is saying he is not aware, then why is he still at post? He should resign because you are supposed to cross-check and sign the first copy before the printing and all other copies before it comes out,” he said.
He further claimed that the response from authorities suggested a lack of due diligence.
“So, what are they saying? Then they are really throwing a lot of dust into our eyes,” he added.
The SHS teachers’ manual developed under NaCCA has recently drawn public attention over sections linked to Physical Health and Education, prompting debate regarding appropriateness of some content and the review processes involved.
NaCCA has issued statements addressing concerns and clarifying aspects of the material while promising further engagement with stakeholders.
Meanwhile, NaCCA has removed printed copies of the manual after admitting that sections of the content on “Gender Identity” did not align with Ghanaian culture, norms, and values.
The Council has stated it has released a revised version of the manual, updated to reflect national values and a biological understanding consistent with Ghanaian societal standards.
