The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Adam Mutawakilu, has announced the deployment of 200 National Service Personnel to help recover outstanding water bill arrears totaling GH¢916 million, as part of efforts to strengthen the company’s revenue base.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, January 13, Mr. Mutawakilu said the initiative aims to tackle revenue leakages and improve payment compliance, particularly among domestic consumers.

He revealed that only about 20 to 30 per cent of domestic water users currently pay their bills digitally, describing the low adoption of payment platforms as a major operational challenge for the utility provider.

To boost compliance, GWL has expanded the role of its Customer Care Assistants, who read meters, to also educate customers on using the Mobile Money platform to pay their water bills.

Mr. Mutawakilu explained that the National Service Personnel will be deployed directly into communities rather than offices, tasked with identifying customers with outstanding bills and recovering arrears.

“As of June, our arrears stood at GH¢916 million. The National Service Personnel will go out to pursue these debts while also helping customers understand how to use the MoMo app to make payments,” he said.

He warned that without such targeted interventions, it would be difficult for GWL to overcome its revenue challenges and sustain efficient operations.
