Ten individuals, including apprentices and tertiary students in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region, have benefited from the Underground Mining Alliance (UMA) and Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF) Community Scholarship Excellence Initiative.

The beneficiaries received hairdressing, dressmaking, welding, and fabrication tools, as well as cash support for tertiary education, during a brief durbar held in Ntotroso.

Speaking to Adom News, UMA’s Alternate Project Manager, Peter Osei Mensah, explained that the initiative was introduced to improve the lives of residents in Kenyasi No. 1, Kenyasi No. 2, Ntotroso, Gyedu, and Womahinso—communities within the company’s operational areas in Ahafo South.

He noted that since its launch in 2021, the initiative has significantly enhanced the livelihoods of apprentices and tertiary students in the five mining communities while strengthening the relationship between the company and residents. He assured that UMA will continue to support the programme.

Some beneficiaries, including apprentice Oppong Seda and student Salamatu Ishak, expressed gratitude to UMA and NADeF, saying the support will go a long way toward improving their lives.

They pledged to make good use of the tools and financial assistance received to justify the company’s continued investment in the development of the mining communities.
