Traditional leaders of Tanoso in the Tano North District of the Ahafo Region have appealed to the government to step up efforts to combat illegal mining, warning that such activities pose a serious threat to the community and the River Tano.

Speaking on behalf of the chiefs at the MP’s Scholarship Initiative, the Ankobiahene of Tanoso, Nana Okofo Datey, said galamsey operations in the area have caused significant environmental damage, particularly to the river.

He noted that while the chiefs have taken steps to address the menace, including the recent arrest of some illegal miners now facing prosecution, additional support is needed to effectively tackle the problem.

The chiefs have called on the Member of Parliament for the area, Dr. Gideon Boako, to convey their concerns to the government and advocate for an increased security presence to strengthen efforts against illegal mining.

Beyond the galamsey challenge, Nana Okofo Datey urged the MP to prioritise development in Tanoso, highlighting deficits in key areas such as road infrastructure, education, and healthcare. He stressed that addressing these issues would significantly improve the living conditions of residents in the community.
