As night falls across much of the country, homes glow with electric light and daily life continues uninterrupted. In Gyato Chayo, a farming community in the Krachi Nchumuru District, darkness takes over completely.
Years after first being promised electricity, the community remains off the national grid, forcing nurses at the local health facility to rely on torchlights and mobile phone flashlights to attend to patients, especially during emergencies at night.
A visit by Adom News‘ Obrempong K. Owusu revealed that the absence of electricity has affected nearly every aspect of life in Gyato Chayo.
Residents say they live without basic amenities such as fans, television, or adequate lighting, making nights uncomfortable and unsafe.
Education has also suffered. According to residents, some teachers refuse postings to the community due to the lack of electricity, while pupils struggle to study after sunset.
Community members told Adom News that they have repeatedly appealed to authorities for help, but their concerns have gone unanswered. They noted that an electrification project began as far back as 2016, yet Gyato Chayo and nearby communities are still waiting to be connected to the grid.
The impact on healthcare is particularly worrying. Residents say the lack of power compromises service delivery at the health centre, making routine care and emergency treatment more difficult.
Nurses at the facility declined to speak on record but acknowledged that the situation affects the quality of care they can provide.
Residents are once again appealing to government and relevant agencies to prioritise the community’s electrification, stressing that access to electricity is critical for healthcare, education, and overall development.
