Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that Latvia has formally agreed to engage Ghana over the ongoing investigation into the death of Nana Agyei Ahyia, an 18-year-old Ghanaian student who died in Riga.
In a Facebook post, Mr Ablakwa disclosed that the Latvian Foreign Ministry has responded positively to Ghana’s request for diplomatic engagement and is prepared to receive a Ghanaian delegation in Riga on January 20, 2026.
“On the matter of ongoing investigations and justice for Nana Agyei, I can confirm that the Latvian Foreign Ministry has officially responded to my request and indicated that Latvian authorities shall be ready to receive my delegation in Riga, Latvia, on the 20th of January, 2026,” he stated.
The Foreign Affairs Minister described the planned visit as a major step toward establishing the facts surrounding the young student’s death and ensuring accountability.
He reaffirmed his commitment to keeping the public informed as the process unfolds. “I promised regular updates in the interest of transparency, accountability and justice — I shall continue to do just that,” Ablakwa added.
Mr Ablakwa further stressed the government’s resolve to protect Ghanaians wherever they may be, noting that the administration of President John Dramani Mahama places high value on the lives and dignity of citizens both at home and abroad.
“The Mahama administration values every Ghanaian life, either at home or abroad; we are prepared to do whatever it takes to safeguard the dignity of all Ghanaians,” he affirmed.
The forthcoming engagement follows sustained public concern over the circumstances surrounding Nana Agyei’s death.
The Electrical Engineering student of Riga Technical University was found dead on June 4, 2025. Latvian authorities initially reported that he fell from the sixth floor of his apartment building, a claim his family has challenged.
Relatives point to a voice note Nana Agyei reportedly sent days before his death, alleging that he had been poisoned, raising questions about the official account.
The January 2026 meeting is expected to strengthen cooperation between Ghanaian and Latvian authorities, push for greater transparency in the investigations, and allow for possible involvement of Nana Agyei’s family in the engagement process.
