The management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has announced plans to undertake a mass burial of unclaimed, unknown, and unidentified bodies currently at its mortuary, citing severe congestion and the facility having reached full capacity.
According to the hospital, records show that approximately 320 unclaimed bodies are likely to be affected.
In a public notice dated December 22, the hospital explained that the situation at the mortuary has become critical, making the exercise necessary to create space and ensure proper management of the facility.
Management indicated that the decision follows standard procedures and applicable regulations governing public health and mortuary services.
Family members, next of kin, or anyone with a legitimate interest in any of the bodies have been advised to contact the hospital within 21 days of the notice, on or before January 18, 2026, to make appropriate arrangements.
“Any remains not claimed after the stated deadline will be buried in line with approved protocols and legal requirements,” the statement added.
KBTH further noted that the mass burial exercise will be carried out in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, and appealed to the public for understanding and cooperation as the hospital works to address the situation.
