Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has revealed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has engaged top-tier legal practitioners in the United States to challenge efforts to extradite him to Ghana.
Dr Ayine made the disclosure on Thursday, December 18, 2025, during the government’s Accountability Series, shortly after Ghana formally submitted an extradition request to US authorities.
He explained that it is common for individuals facing extradition to contest the process through the courts. “The person who is the subject of an extradition will fight it in court. I have been informed that Mr Ofori-Atta has hired some of the top lawyers in the US with extensive experience to defend him,” Dr Ayine said, emphasising that this move does not intimidate Ghanaian authorities.
The Attorney General noted that extradition matters in the United States are handled within the federal judicial system and undergo multiple levels of legal scrutiny. “He has the right to challenge any decision through the federal district court, the circuit court, and, ultimately, the US Supreme Court if he is dissatisfied,” he added.
While acknowledging that the legal process could be lengthy, Dr Ayine expressed confidence in the strength of Ghana’s extradition request, stressing that the ultimate outcome will be determined by the US judicial authorities.
