The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has attributed the breakdown of several traffic lights across the country to the theft of critical components.

Speaking to Adom News ahead of the Christmas festivities, the Public Relations Officer of the Authority, Pearl Adusu-Sateckla, expressed concern about the safety of road users, noting that malfunctioning traffic lights continue to pose risks on major roads.

“Most of the traffic lights that are not working have been vandalised. Thieves steal essential components, and once that happens, the lights stop functioning,” she explained.

Ms. Adusu-Sateckla urged the public to remain vigilant and report anyone seen tampering with traffic lights or falsely claiming to be repairing them.

“If you see anyone around a traffic light claiming to be fixing it, please report the person to the nearest police station or relevant authorities,” she appealed.

She further disclosed that the Department of Urban Roads has assured the NRSA that steps are being taken to repair some of the faulty traffic lights.

“At our recent stakeholders’ meeting, the Department of Urban Roads assured us that a number of the broken traffic lights will be repaired,” she added.

In the meantime, the Ghana Police Service will be deployed to selected intersections to manage traffic and ensure smooth vehicular movement during the festive season.

Ms. Adusu-Sateckla also urged drivers to remain calm, explaining that repairs on some traffic lights are delayed because missing or stolen parts have to be imported, which takes time.
