The Rural Fire Department of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Northern Region has organised a training programme for community fire volunteer squads in the Tolon District to strengthen grassroots fire prevention and response.

The training brought together volunteers from Nlala Yili, Yobzeri and Gbanjon, with a focus on equipping them with practical skills to educate residents on fire safety and respond promptly to fire outbreaks, especially in hard-to-reach rural communities.

Participants were taken through basic fire prevention measures, early detection of fire hazards, safe response techniques, and community sensitisation strategies aimed at reducing fire incidents during the dry season.

The programme was coordinated by ADO I Sulemana Cosmos, Regional Rural Fire Officer, in collaboration with ADO I Seidu Issah, Acting District Rural Fire Officer of the Tolon District Fire Station.

Speaking during the training, officials of the GNFS stressed the importance of community volunteers in complementing the work of the Service, particularly in areas where access and response time can be challenging. They encouraged the volunteers to serve as fire safety ambassadors in their respective communities.

The GNFS reiterated its commitment to strengthening community-based fire management systems across the region as part of efforts to reduce fire outbreaks, protect lives, and safeguard property.
