Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic deaths of six young women in a stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Dr. Bawumia described the incident as “deeply tragic,” extending condolences to the bereaved families and praying for the speedy recovery of those injured.
“My condolences go out to the families of the young Ghanaians who lost their lives today at the El-Wak Stadium. May the injured recover quickly, and the souls of our departed ladies rest in peace,” he wrote.
The stampede occurred as thousands of job seekers thronged the stadium to participate in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise. Eyewitnesses reported that overcrowding and intense pushing at the entrance points led to chaos, resulting in multiple injuries and fatalities.
The GAF later confirmed that six female applicants had died, while many others sustained injuries of varying severity. The injured were rushed to the 37 Military Hospital, with some remaining in critical condition.
Following the tragedy, the GAF temporarily suspended the recruitment exercise and assured the public of full cooperation with investigations to determine the causes of the incident and prevent future occurrences.
The heartbreaking event has sparked nationwide grief and renewed calls for improved crowd management and safety measures during national recruitment exercises.
