The Margaret Marquart Catholic Nursing Training College in Kpando has reinforced its reputation as one of Ghana’s leading nursing institutions after one of its students was named the overall best nursing student in the country for the 2021/2022 academic year.
The announcement was made during the college’s triple-event ceremony, which combined the graduation of two cohorts, the matriculation of new students, and the launch of its fifth-anniversary celebrations.
A total of 85 students from the 2021/2022 cohort and 95 from the 2022/2023 cohort graduated after years of rigorous training, while 97 new students were formally matriculated to begin their nursing education.
Although the college was established in 2017, academic activities commenced in 2021, making next year its fifth anniversary.
The highlight of the event was the announcement of Batanam Alberta as the overall best nursing student in Ghana — an achievement that has elevated the college’s profile nationally. Alberta, who also delivered the valedictory address, praised the quality of training she received and expressed optimism about the future of primary healthcare in the country.
“Our training has prepared us to serve with excellence. Yet many hospitals still lack even the most basic resources. Nurses are often forced to improvise, which can sometimes result in preventable deaths or complications. Addressing corruption and bureaucracy is essential to saving lives,” she said.
The Principal of the College, Madam Francisca Naana Arthur, highlighted the institution’s growing infrastructure challenges. With a student population of 332, the college operates a shift system, relies on only two lecture halls, and lacks hostel and administrative facilities.
“We face serious infrastructure deficits, which put extra pressure on both students and management. Nevertheless, we remain determined not to compromise the quality of training we provide,” she said.
Despite these challenges, Margaret Marquart Catholic Nursing Training College continues to produce exceptional nurses who are making significant contributions across the country. College management reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence and expressed hope for increased support from government and partners to enhance its facilities.
Officials say the national recognition of Alberta is proof that dedication and quality training can prevail even in the face of challenges.
