One of the six individuals sentenced to death by hanging for attempting to overthrow the government, Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu, has been granted bail pending the determination of his appeal.

The High Court approved Debrah’s bail at GH¢2.5 million, with two sureties to be justified, granting him temporary freedom while the appeal process continues.

Debrah, a fleet manager, was among six persons convicted in November 2023 on charges of conspiracy to commit high treason and committing high treason. The court held that the group had planned to destabilise the nation and overthrow the constitutionally elected government.

The six convicts — Donya Kafui, alias Ezor (a blacksmith); Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu; Johannes Zikpi (a civilian employee of the Ghana Armed Forces); and three soldiers, WO II Esther Saan Dekuwine, L/Cpl Ali Solomon, and Cpl Sylvester Akanpewon — were all sentenced to death by hanging after a protracted trial.

The high-profile case, regarded as one of Ghana’s most significant treason trials in recent years, also resulted in the acquittal of ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo, Colonel Samuel Kodzo Gameli, and Corporal Seidu Abubakar, who were found not guilty of abetment and conspiracy charges.

The proceedings, which began in April 2021, spanned several years. The prosecution, led by then Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, called 13 witnesses, including seven military officers, before the final judgment was delivered.
