Gov’t to buy excess eggs for School Feeding Programme – Agric Minister

-

Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has announced that the Ministry of Education will soon begin purchasing surplus eggs from poultry farmers across the country as part of efforts to address the current glut in the market.

According to the Minister, the initiative follows a directive from President John Dramani Mahama instructing that the excess eggs be absorbed through the School Feeding Programme to support both farmers and pupils.

“The issue was raised before Cabinet, and His Excellency the President directed the Ministry of Education to ensure that the glut is cleared to support the School Feeding Programme. The Ministry is now preparing to clear the glut, and very soon, you will see them on the ground procuring the excess eggs. So, relating to the glut, the issue has been solved,” he said on Citi FM.

His assurance comes at a time when poultry farmers, particularly in the Bono Region, are recording significant losses due to an oversupply of eggs and declining prices. Many have been forced to sell their birds earlier than planned to mitigate financial challenges.

The Agriculture Minister emphasized that the government’s intervention seeks to safeguard local poultry businesses, stabilize prices, and ensure that nutritious, locally produced eggs are incorporated into the national School Feeding Programme.

Meanwhile, the official launch of the Nkukor Nkitinkiti initiative is slated for Wednesday, November 12, 2025. The programme aims to boost domestic poultry production by supplying day-old chicks, feed, and veterinary support to households across the country.
