Residents living along the Fumso–Aboabo No. 1 road in the Adansi Asokwa District of the Ashanti Region are calling for swift government intervention to halt sand-winning activities that are gradually destroying the road and weakening nearby high-tension poles.
The 9-kilometre stretch, constructed just two years ago under the previous government, is already showing signs of deterioration due to constant excavation by sand winners operating along the roadside.
Residents fear that if the activity continues unchecked, it could lead to the total collapse of the road and pose a serious threat to lives and properties, including possible blackouts in the affected communities.
When Adom News’ Isaac K. Normanyo visited the area, residents expressed frustration over the reckless operations of the sand winners. They lamented that the practice has filled gutters with sand, blocking drainage systems and worsening erosion anytime it rains.
The Assembly Member for the area also confirmed that despite several complaints made to the District Assembly, no action has been taken to address the situation.
He noted that heavy-duty trucks often speed through the community without regard for residents’ safety, especially schoolchildren.
Meanwhile, one victim of a near accident caused by the poor road condition recounted that he narrowly escaped death, adding that “if not for God’s grace, I wouldn’t be alive today.”
Residents are therefore appealing to the Adansi Asokwa District Assembly, the Electricity Company of Ghana, and traditional authorities to take urgent steps to regulate the activities of sand winners and prevent a looming disaster.
