Give gov’t time in galamsey fight despite worsening situation – GJA President

-

President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has appealed to Ghanaians to give the government more time to show results in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, despite the worsening situation on the ground.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Dwumfour admitted that the galamsey menace appears to be escalating but cautioned against rushing to condemn government efforts.

“The fight against galamsey is getting worse, but we should give the government some time before holding them accountable,” he said.

He noted that the media, through the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, has consistently played a crucial role in advocating for sustainable environmental practices and exposing illegal mining activities.

“At the previous media engagement with the President and civil society organisations, he reiterated his commitment to the fight. We can train journalists to follow up and report on what is happening on the ground,” Mr. Dwumfour added.

Reacting to the recent attack on a director of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Squad (NAIMOS), he expressed deep concern, describing the incident as evidence of the dangerous and entrenched nature of the fight against galamsey.

“For a NAIMOS director to be attacked shows we are not fully ready for this fight,” he lamented.

Mr. Dwumfour reaffirmed the GJA’s commitment to supporting responsible journalism and promoting national efforts to combat illegal mining.
