Sports Minister assures National Sports Policy will be ready by first quarter of 2026

Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced that Ghana’s long-awaited National Sports Policy will be completed and officially adopted before the end of the first quarter of 2026.

Speaking before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday, November 4, Mr. Adams said the delay in finalising the policy was due to restructuring within the Ministry, following the expansion of its mandate to include recreation.

“Actually, the only reason that the policy is still in the final stage of being a draft is because of the realignment that we’ve had at the Ministry. Now, recreation has been a very high consideration, so we need to factor that also into the policy,” he explained.

The Minister also revealed that President John Dramani Mahama has directed the creation of a School Sports Agency to coordinate and promote sports development at the basic and secondary school levels nationwide.

“The President wants us to establish a school sports agency that will be responsible for school sports. It will no longer be left entirely to the Ghana Education Service, where activities sometimes falter due to lack of time or resources. This agency will oversee school and grassroots sports,” Mr. Adams noted.

He assured PAC members that the Ministry is working to incorporate these new directives and institutional changes into the draft policy, stressing that the process is nearing completion.

“We needed to factor all these into the draft policy as it existed. I can assure you that before our next meeting… we are sure that before the end of the first quarter next year, the policy should be ready as a full policy and not just a draft,” he added.

Once finalised, the National Sports Policy is expected to provide a comprehensive blueprint for the development, management, and promotion of sports and recreation across Ghana.
