Former University of Ghana SRC President, Maradona Yeboah Adjei, known in showbiz as Guru NKZ, has revealed how his leadership and student advocacy efforts led to a major win for students.
In an interview with Joy Prime, Guru revealed that under his leadership, he secured a 50% reduction in traditional hall fees, with the help of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.
He explained that his team fought relentlessly against what they saw as an unfair hike in hall fees, which had been increased from GH¢2,000 to GH¢3,000, placing extra financial pressure on students and parents.
“We fought the system. We petitioned every level of authority, right up to the Minister of Education. With the intervention of Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, we secured a 50% reduction. It had never happened before, that was a real victory for students,” he shared.
Guru described the achievement as one of the defining milestones of his time in office, adding that it proved the power of student activism when guided by purpose and persistence.
He also reflected on the uniqueness of his leadership journey, noting that it marked a rare moment where someone from the entertainment industry led Ghana’s premier university.
“This is the first time someone from showbiz represented the entire student body. It set a precedent showing that artists, too, can lead, inspire, and influence policy in meaningful ways,” he said.
