Germany commits €65 million to support Ghana’s development agenda

Ghana and Germany have reaffirmed their strong diplomatic and economic partnership, with Germany pledging €65 million in development cooperation for 2025, pending approval by the German Parliament.

The announcement was made by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier during a joint press briefing with President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House in Accra.

The funding will support key development areas, including healthcare, agriculture, and job creation, while also strengthening bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.

Speaking through an interpreter, President Steinmeier noted that the pledge is subject to approval by the German Parliament, the Bundestag, as part of Germany’s long-standing commitment to sustainable development in Ghana.

“We have been able to bring good tidings today. Germany will again commit more than 65 million euros to Ghana in the framework of our development cooperation. The details will be negotiated before the end of this month,” he said.

President Mahama commended Germany for its consistent support for Ghana’s national development and emphasized the importance of deepening collaboration in areas such as trade, renewable energy, vocational training, and regional security.

He also assured the visiting delegation, which included German investors, of his administration’s commitment to maintaining a business-friendly environment that encourages sustainable private investment.

“Our government remains focused on resetting the economy and creating the right conditions for businesses to thrive,” President Mahama stated, highlighting his ‘Resetting Ghana’ agenda as a roadmap for economic stability and growth.

Both leaders also discussed a potential labour mobility agreement to facilitate structured employment opportunities for young Ghanaian professionals in Germany. The initiative aims to address skills shortages in specific sectors within Germany while expanding career prospects for Ghana’s youth.

President Mahama expressed optimism that the agreement will mark a new era of practical cooperation between the two nations, deepening people-to-people connections and fostering shared prosperity.

President Steinmeier’s three-day official visit marks a significant milestone in Ghana–Germany relations, which have remained strong since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1957. It underscores Germany’s growing interest in Ghana’s economic transformation, positioning both countries as strategic partners in advancing sustainable development and regional stability.
