The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Alhaji Yusif Sulemana (MP), has held discussions with China’s Zijin Group of Companies on strengthening Ghana’s mining sector and promoting environmental sustainability.
The meeting, held on the sidelines of this year’s China Mining Conference, brought together key players in the global mining industry to deliberate on critical issues affecting the sector.
During his interaction with the leadership of the Zijin Group on October 24, Alhaji Sulemana emphasized that while Ghana’s mining sector presents vast opportunities, environmental preservation must remain a top priority.
He reaffirmed government’s commitment to sustainable mining through initiatives such as the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) and other environmentally conscious policies.
According to him, achieving a balance between mutual economic benefits and environmental protection is central to Ghana’s mining strategy and will continue to guide its partnerships with the Zijin Group and other international stakeholders.
“We want to assure Zijin that the Government of Ghana is ready to partner with you for mutual benefits,” he said.
Touching on ongoing collaboration, the Deputy Minister noted that Ghana welcomes support from the Zijin Group in addressing illegal mining, which continues to pose a major environmental challenge.
He urged the company to contribute to Ghana’s land and water restoration efforts through knowledge transfer and technical assistance, a move he said would enhance China’s image in Ghana’s renewed fight against illegal mining.
In response, a representative of the Zijin Group reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting Ghana in maximizing its mineral resources while upholding environmental sustainability.
The Deputy Minister later toured one of Zijin’s mining sites, where he commended the company for its innovation and contributions to the global mining ecosystem.
The engagement is expected to further strengthen cooperation between Ghana and the Zijin Group, one of China’s largest multinational mining corporations.
