The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, says the decision to retain Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars does not fall under his authority.
Despite steering Ghana to a second consecutive FIFA World Cup qualification, sections of the public and football pundits have called for Addo’s dismissal, citing the team’s inconsistent performances.
Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku, however, has made it clear that the 50-year-old tactician will remain in charge and lead the team to the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
When asked if he supports Okraku’s stance, Kofi Adams, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency, explained that coaching appointments are not within his remit.
“The Sports Minister is not responsible for appointing coaches, but rather the Minister pays the coach, so the conversation of appointment of coaches and as to whether he [Otto Addo] will be sacked or not, is beyond me as the Sports Minister,” Adams told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.
The Black Stars will learn their group-stage opponents for the 2026 World Cup on December 5. Before that, they are scheduled to play Japan and South Korea in friendly matches on November 14 and 18, respectively.
After failing to progress from the group stage at the 2022 tournament in Qatar, Ghana will be eager to make a stronger impression on the global stage next summer.
