It definitely touched a nerve – Semenyo speaks on racism incident against Liverpool

-

AFC Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo has spoken candidly about the racial abuse he suffered during his side’s Premier League opener against Liverpool at Anfield.

The Ghanaian international was targeted by a Liverpool supporter when he moved to the touchline to take a throw-in, forcing the match to be temporarily halted.

Police later arrested a man in connection with the incident, who was subsequently released on conditional bail, including a ban from attending football matches.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Semenyo admitted the experience left a deep emotional mark.

“I think I’m a strong individual, so when things like that happen, I always just try to move on, but with the Liverpool incident, it definitely, definitely touched a nerve.

“I was nearly at breaking point, to be honest,” the 25-year-old added.

Despite the distressing episode, the 25-year-old responded in remarkable fashion, scoring twice in that match and later tallying 10 goal contributions for the Cherries so far this season.

His performances have also been instrumental in helping Ghana secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Semenyo will be looking to maintain his impressive form when Bournemouth face Nottingham Forest at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday.
