Staff members of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) at Prudential Bank Ghana Limited staged a protest at the head office on Wednesday, alleging unfair treatment and discrimination in recent salary adjustments under the new management.
Wearing red armbands and headbands, the aggrieved workers chanted protest songs, claiming that management had implemented selective salary increases that benefited a few employees while leaving out long-serving staff who have dedicated years to the bank.
One of the workers, who spoke to the media, said the union had earlier negotiated a 15 percent salary increment across the board at the beginning of the year. However, management reportedly deferred payment, citing financial constraints.
“Management told us they had no funds to pay at the time,” the worker said. “But now they’ve promoted some staff, mostly from the IT department, and raised their salaries while the rest of us have been sidelined. That’s why ICU members are demonstrating today.”
The demonstrators are demanding fair and transparent salary reviews for all departments and want management to explain the criteria used in the recent pay adjustments.
Meanwhile, Prudential Bank’s management and the ICU are said to be in a crucial meeting to find an amicable solution to the impasse.
