Reintroduction of anti-LGBTQ+ Bill won’t succeed – Michael Okyere Baafi

-

Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, has downplayed the impact of the reintroduction of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

According to him, the process “will not amount to anything.”

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, the MP suggested that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was using the issue for political showmanship rather than genuine commitment.

“The NDC is doing all of us ‘kro kro de john.’ We were expecting the President and his team to show the same force they had in opposition and pass the bill immediately after coming to power. This new introduction is nothing; it won’t be a smooth process,” he said.

Earlier, MP for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, revealed on Joy News’ AM Show that the reintroduced bill is expected to be laid before Parliament for its first reading between today and tomorrow, emphasizing its urgency and public interest.

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, which seeks to criminalise certain LGBTQ+ activities and promote what sponsors describe as “Ghanaian family values,” has been one of the country’s most divisive legislative proposals.

An earlier version passed in 2024 was stalled following legal challenges and a court injunction preventing Parliament from sending it to the President for assent.

The reintroduction marks a renewed push by its proponents to see it passed in the 2025 legislative session.
